Palm Beach Gardens Fire Rescue Sets New Standard for First Responder Mental Health with 21% Early Engagement

Studies show that 75% of the workforce doesn’t need the reactive care that’s traditionally provided by Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs), they need proactive support that meets them in their daily moments, before challenges become crises.

First responders face high stakes and compounding stressors, including trauma exposure and a culture that has historically discouraged seeking help. For the City of Palm Beach Gardens Fire Department, the mental well-being of its employees is directly tied to the quality of its service to the community. They know that a healthy, supported workforce stays more engaged, builds greater resilience, and better protects the community it serves.

“Our firefighters show up for this community every day in its most critical moments. It’s our responsibility to make sure they feel supported in theirs,” said Keith Bryer, Fire Chief of Palm Beach Gardens Fire Rescue Department. “Bringing Spirence to our department is an investment in our people, their families, and ultimately the community we serve.”

Through Spirence’s platform, fire rescue department personnel will have access to preventative mental health education, certified coaches, and expert-built tools to help them manage everyday stress and anxiety before it turns into burnout or something much worse.

This partnership reflects a growing number of public sector employers investing in preventative mental well-being for its workforce. For firefighters and first responders, preventative mental health is both a compassionate and strategic imperative that acknowledges the unique psychological demands of the job and builds the resilience needed to sustain long, healthy careers.

“Palm Beach Gardens Fire Rescue leadership truly gets it. If mental wellness support isn’t easy to access, relatable to daily life, and completely confidential, people simply won’t use it,’ said Laura Kunz, Co-Founder and Chief Commercial Officer at Spirence. “Seeing the department reach 21% engagement in just five weeks is incredibly encouraging and reinforces what we believe at Spirence, today’s workforce is far more open to proactive mental wellness support when it’s delivered in a way that feels approachable, relevant, and human.”

By bringing Spirence’s unique approach to the City of Palm Beach Gardens Fire Department, both organizations are setting a new standard where every member of the department has the support they need, long before they need it.
