Tom Koehler on Navigating Career Pivots, Finding New Purpose, and Life After Baseball
What happens when the career you’ve built your entire life around comes to an end?
For many professionals, a major career pivot isn’t just a change in routine – it’s a total shift in identity. On this episode of Prevention Pioneers, former MLB pitcher Tom Koehler shares his journey of navigating a forced retirement from baseball and finding new purpose on the other side.
Many people know the anxiety and uncertainty that come with closing one chapter and facing the unknown. Tom’s story is about more than baseball. It’s about learning to let go, finding new purposes, and building a life beyond the field.
Facing the End of a Baseball Career
Tom’s journey out of baseball began with a shoulder injury. Doctors told him the surgery he needed rarely resulted in a successful return to the game, especially at his age. Amid two years of unsuccessful rehab efforts, Tom found himself questioning whether he had the energy to keep going, knowing another setback might be waiting for him.
After pushing through and trying to make a comeback, he reached a moment of clarity on the field. As Tom recalls, “I can’t do this anymore…I threw one curveball and untucked my jersey, and I’m like, that’s it.”
That moment marked the end of his baseball career and the beginning of a new chapter.
Facing a Career Pivot
Walking away from baseball meant starting over. Tom had to learn to be a beginner again, something he says takes a particular mindset: the ability to “grind and see the light at the end of the tunnel, but also be okay with the failure if you put everything into it.”
The mindset carried him into multiple new paths rather than one clear-cut next step – coaching youth softball and eventually picking up competitive jiu-jitsu.
Redefining Success and Finding New Purpose
While most people equate success with money or accolades, Tom found his own definition: “Success is taking your ability in whatever it is you do and maximizing it.”
For Tom, that meant finding fulfillment in new roles. Coaching young athletes became one outlet, not because every kid would become a star, but because he could help them become a little better and a little more confident by the end of the season.
Mental Health and Life After Professional Sports
Transitioning out of professional sports left Tom confronting a new emotional landscape. The sudden loss of structure, community, and purpose made it easy to feel isolated. He recalls seeing “plenty of former teammates that have fallen into some sort of addiction, ruined their family lives when they’re done playing. And it’s finding something that can fill that gap that is so important.”
Jiu-jitsu became its own form of therapy for Tom, helping him stay mentally sharp and giving him a healthy outlet for his competitive drive. He reflects: “It’s allowed me to continue to be the same person that I was, just in a different discipline.”
